The club was formed in 1964, and joined the Bury and District League, before switching to the Colchester League in 1971. In 1978 the club moved again, this time to the Essex and Suffolk Border League. In the 1988-89 season the club won both the league and league cup, and were promoted to the Eastern Counties League first division.

Cornard United won the first division at the first attempt, and were promoted to the Premier Division, where they remained until 1996, when they finished bottom and were relegated. For the 2008-09 season, they are playing in the Eastern Counties League Division One. The club has been managed by Chris Symes since the mid-1990s.
